Buzzword “Recovered Energy Generation” (REG) – using “waste heat” to make electricity
by Andrew on Jun.25, 2009, under heat, tangent

Not much info at Forbes, but digging further we find that “ recovered energygeneration (REG)” is being used: ”… The facilities owned and operated by Ormat will capture waste heat produced by the Kinder Morgan natural gas compressor along the Trailblazer natural gas pipeline.
“The recovered heat is used to vaporize a fluid to drive a turbine/generator set that produces energy. …”
The company ORMAT specializes in REG for applications including exhause gas from compressor stations, interstate pipelines and more:

Greens in the Kitchen = Green Kitchen
by Andrew on Apr.29, 2009, under products, tangent

Whirlpool, the makers of many appliances in the US and world wide, have
come up with a way to reuse “wasted” energy from your ‘fridge coils to the water from the dishwasher and sink to green up your kitchen.
Looks great, but – where do you store your dishes? keep them in the dishwasher?
At first glance, I thought “what a great idea! Have the plants grow right on the cupboard doors – then I thought of opening them for the breakfast bowls (slosh! out goes the greywater onto the counter), then closing the door (slosh! up the door, down the door, onto the counter again).
They’ve got a larger kitchen than I’ll ever have, but the ideas get the DIY gears turning: maybe a use for all that wasted space above the cupboards where we should (and d0 – sort of) dust regularly.
